After tabling the issue for more than a month, the Aberdeen Board of Aldermen has yet to vote on how, if at all, the city's pit bull ordinance should be amended. Aberdeen Mayor Jim Ballard said the issue was "complicated" at Tuesday's board of aldermen meeting.

"This may seem like it is a cut-and-dry issue, but it is very complicated," Ballard said. "We have an ordinance in place that needs to be addressed — we need to change the language from pit bull to vicious dog."

According to Ballard, the city amended its dog ordinance to include a section on pit bulls in 1985. According to the standing ordinance, pit bulls are to be in pens with lids covering the container, the dogs must wear orange collars and the dogs must be registered with the city.

Aberdeen Animal Shelter volunteer Astrid Peterson, one of the advocates of a revised ordinance, said the current ordinance is not being enforced.

"The current ordinance is not being enforced properly, but even if it that was the case, the shelter does not have the proper facilities to cage pit bulls or other vicious dogs," she said.

Neither Ballard nor the board offered a time table on when the issue will be resolved.

I would also like to add on to the statement made earlier: how vicious a dog is falls back to the owner. If you train a dog to be vicious, there gonna react that way.... So my point is that any dog can be vicious if their owner trains them to be... It does not necessarily have to be a pit bull. I see other breeds thats as vicious as a pit bull and also will bite you if they're that vicious to do so... A bite is a bite whether its small medium or large. So alot of dogs are running around in the neighborhood and are capable of biting people.....so the ordinance should not only apply to pit bulls but dogs that are vicious in general, because all dogs are capable of biting... and what you do for ONE, you need to do for all!!!!

I am a resident of Aberdeen, particularly Meadowlane Drive. we have three pitbulls that are not fighting dogs at all. THey have never been fought before nor do they ever come out of their cage. Remid you, Meadowlane is a pre-dominantly white neighborhood, so of course, when you are an african american living in a pre-dominantly white neighborhood, your business is gonna always be on display. THis one guy has been complaining about our dogs as if he is seeing them walk the neighborhood unsecure? A Lie...... we never even walk or let the dogs out of the kennel, so im beginning to wonder if the pits are the issue in the case or is it simply because the pit's ownwers are african americans and all african american people are known to fight their dogs????? I personally think this is a racism issue because african americans are already not wanted in the neighbor hood, but I feel that as long as your pit is on your personal property, kept to themselves in a kennel on chains, what is the big fuss about??/ The young man stated that people are afraid to walk on Meadowlane because of the dogs.. We'll I see people walk the street all of the time and no one appears to be aferaid of our dogs. And how can you be afraid of dogs that are on chains and locked inside the cage??? THere are way more issues that Aberdeen needs to be focusing on instead of worried about pits, that in my case, are on private property and never leaves that property or fight other pits... I seee a young man walking his boxer in the neighborhood and there are no complaints... I wonder why???? could it be because he is the opposite race of myself???? Big dogs come by with their owners and stop do poo poo in my yard and I dont say a word... What Aberdeen need to focus on is bringing the community more jobs, better education, ban racism--- (because it does indeed still exist), not to just base your judgement off of one man's opinion but to look at the situation as a whole..... I feel that there is way more things to be worried about instead of pit bulls because they're not the only dangerous dogs around him. You need to look at how vicious any breed of dog is and base your decision on that as well..... to the young man, who continues up the fuss about our dogs and who also sent the newspaper staff to our house to take pictures of our dogs in their kennel on their chains, let go of racism because you know as well as i know that this is the real issue... and from my understand you dont even live on Meadowlane, you just stay in the area, so why are you so worried about our dogs at our house???? And yes i am mad because this mess is ridiculous......

One thing about it Micheal Vick does not have anything to do with Aberdeen MS. People should use correct English before they want to post anything. No one understands broken English. You also need to know that all dogs are not vicious. Just because the city thinks that a certain breed of dog makes them that way. You all need to use common sense. I worked around dogs and cats and some cats are worse than dogs. People assume that a dog is vicious by the color and thats stereotyping dogs. Leave my dog alone and I won't bother yours.

Probalities of being bit by pitbulls:

man = 11%

child = 8%

newborn = 3%

other dogs = 39%

dog owner = 53%

The city did the right thing by doing "nothing" if that makes sense, jim ballard has trouble with the decision if he should sit to piss or stand up in the mens room, you pitbull supporters no need in to worry with him as your mayor

This person has a point, the owners have neglected their dogs for purpose of fighting for bragging rights or money. What if the tables were turned and the owner of the fighting pit was on a leash. We as animal lovers would love to do anything to protect all animals. I am a animal lover as well as a Micheal Vick fan. The man has done his time, so leave him the hell alone. Pit bulls as well as other fighting dogs have feelings. All the owners want to do when their dog has open wounds from fighting is put peroxide on it. These animals are hurting and are in much pain.The next time you [the dog fighter] thinks about letting your dog fight, take his place or her's.

I dont agree with the banning of the pits anywhere ! It shouldnt be the dogs that are being punished it should be the owner ! They are the ones that make these sweet puppies into very agressive dogs. My uncle has a full blooded Pit and she is the sweetest girl that you will ever come across, you can also come across some very agressive labs are we going to ban them too ?
